Cumberland Retreat sits on one of the most exciting corridors in the city right now — the East Bank / Dickerson Pike strip that’s become a running list of Butcher & Bee spinoffs, James Beard nominees, and neighborhood dives worth walking to. This guide is what we tell friends when they ask what to do while they’re here: what to walk to, what’s worth a rideshare, where to grab coffee, and how to get downtown without the parking headache.
Short version: Nissan Stadium is 1.3 miles — walkable in under 30 minutes for Titans games, CMA Fest, or a big stadium show. Broadway is 1.5 miles, about 10 minutes by rideshare. And you can walk to Redheaded Stranger, Turkey and the Wolf, Folk, FancyPants, Cherries, and Junior for dinner. Germantown’s classics (City House, Henrietta Red) plus the new Neuhoff development are 5–7 minutes by car.
Walk to Nashville’s Best Restaurants
This is what sets Cumberland Retreat apart. Instead of ordering an Uber to dinner, you’re walking. The East Bank / Dickerson Pike corridor has become one of Nashville’s most exciting restaurant strips — Butcher & Bee spinoffs, James Beard talent, and neighborhood dives all within easy walking distance.
The Headliners (all walkable)
- Redheaded Stranger — the Butcher & Bee team’s taco shop with the famous green chili cheeseburger. This is the anchor of the walkable pocket.
- Turkey and the Wolf Icehouse — Mason Hereford’s New Orleans sandwich shop (James Beard nominee). Fried bologna, collard green melt, natural wine, all on a big grassy lot with a cinderblock shack. Closed Wednesdays.
- Folk — Philip Krajeck’s hearth-fired pizza spot. Reservations essential.
- FancyPants — Butcher & Bee sibling doing New American fine dining. The date-night pick if you want to walk to dinner without giving up ambition.
- Junior — Philip Krajeck’s second concept, tucked into an old Piggly Wiggly. Wine-forward, tight menu, worth the walk.
Short Rideshare, Still Close
- The Salt Line — Washington D.C.’s New England seafood favorite just opened its first non-mid-Atlantic outpost on the East Bank near Nissan Stadium. Lobster rolls, oysters, seafood towers. A quick rideshare from Cumberland.
- Butcher & Bee — East Nashville’s Middle Eastern-influenced small-plates room on Main Street. Whipped feta, house-made pita, wood-fired mains. Weekend brunch is a local ritual. Short rideshare east.
- ELEVEN11 — Vietnamese-inspired counter restaurant with just eleven seats plus an adjoining cocktail bar and late-night lounge on Dickerson Pike. From the Old Glory team, Chef Son Pham. Bear Creek ribeye, garlic noodles, whole grilled fish, ginger tofu ice cream on a cold rock. Reservations on OpenTable — the counter fills fast. Wed–Sun evenings only; short rideshare north. $$$$.
The Neighborhood Regulars (walkable, no fuss)
- Wilburn Street Tavern — Teresa Mason’s (of Mas Tacos fame) dive bar with a pool table, Sonoran hot dogs, and legendary nachos. Local’s favorite.
- Cherries — cocktail bar with a patio and happy hour running until 8pm. This is the patio happy hour move when you want a proper drink without the Broadway noise.
- Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken — the Memphis icon opened its East Nashville outpost in fall 2024. Skip the hot chicken line downtown and walk here instead.
- Shugga Hi Bakery & Cafe — Sunday jazz brunch buffet with bottomless mimosas, chicken and waffles. A neighborhood must.
Coffee & Morning Picks
Retrograde Coffee Espresso lovers
Retrograde Coffee is the walk-to spot for anyone who takes espresso seriously. Founded in 2018 and now roasting their own beans through sister company Lightspeed Coffee, they do a cortado, flat white, and espresso & tonic that Nashville espresso snobs actually rate. Menu is on Toast.
Other Coffee & Breakfast (still walkable or a 3-min drive)
- Shugga Hi Bakery & Cafe — chicken and waffles, Southern comfort breakfast, plus that Sunday jazz brunch buffet with bottomless mimosas.
- Turkey and the Wolf serves a breakfast menu 9–11am daily — walk over for a breakfast sandwich you’ll be thinking about back home.
Germantown — A Short Drive Away
Germantown is a 5–7 minute drive across the river — Nashville’s densest strip of James Beard–pedigreed restaurants, plus the buzzy new Neuhoff development on the west bank of the Cumberland. Save this for the night you want a proper reservation dinner.
The Germantown Classics
- City House — Tandy Wilson’s Italian-Southern institution. Belly ham pizza, cornbread gnocchi, and the legendary Sunday Suppers. James Beard Best Chef Southeast pedigree.
- Henrietta Red — Chef Julia Sullivan’s oyster bar and wood-roasted seafood room. Daily happy hour 5–6pm. Closed Mondays.
- 5th & Taylor — upscale New American classics. Beer-can chicken, bacon-wrapped quail, sausage cheddar biscuits, and family-style mashed potatoes with every entrée.
Neuhoff District (Germantown’s newest food strip)
The old Neuhoff meatpacking plant on the Cumberland’s west bank has become one of Nashville’s most-talked-about mixed-use developments. A few picks:
- Monday Night Brewing — the taproom anchor since 2021. 24+ drafts, indoor-outdoor space, full food menu, and easily the most group-friendly stop at Neuhoff.
- Fishmonger — Atlanta seafood transplant. Lobster rolls, blackened grouper sandwiches, frozen painkillers.
- Charmers — the Peninsula team’s cocktail bar with a riverside patio. Burgers, fries, cocktails. Open all week.
- Babychan — Japanese daytime café from the Kisser team (Food & Wine Best New Chefs 2024). Espresso, shokupan, rice omelets, pastries.
Walking to Nissan Stadium & Getting Downtown
Nissan Stadium is 1.3 miles from the front door — walkable in under 30 minutes. For Titans games, CMA Fest, or a big stadium show, this is one of the best-positioned group rentals in the city. Walk over pregame, skip the $50 event parking, skip the rideshare surge on the way out. It’s the whole reason a lot of guests book Cumberland Retreat.
Broadway is 1.5 miles — about 10 minutes by rideshare (or a determined 30-minute walk). Same for the Ryman, Bridgestone Arena, and the honky-tonk strip. Close enough that Ubers are cheap and fast, far enough that you can actually sleep at night.
Driving downtown yourself? Save the parking headache — Broadway parking runs $30–50 on event nights. Rideshare wins on every axis except the fun of driving your own car.
Around the Neighborhood
The East Bank / RiverNorth corridor has quietly become one of Nashville’s most interesting pockets — there’s more to do here than just walk to dinner. A few of our favorites within a mile or two:
Sports & Games
- Nissan Stadium — 1.3 miles. Titans games, CMA Fest, and the biggest stadium tours (Beyoncé, Taylor, George Strait have all played here).
- First Horizon Park — Nashville Sounds baseball — about 1.1 miles across the river. Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, April through September. Walk-up tickets available for most weeknight games; a great cheap night out.
- Topgolf East Bank — 500 Cowan St, about a mile. Climate-controlled hitting bays, full bar and food menu, open late. Book bays in advance on weekends.
- Noble’s Central — 2292 Rosa L Parks Blvd, a few minutes up the road. Big beer hall with lots of TVs, house-smoked BBQ, and a proper southern meat-and-three menu. One of the better low-key pregame spots before walking to Nissan or heading to Broadway.
Markets, Parks & Green Space
- Nashville Farmers’ Market — 900 Rosa L Parks Blvd, about a mile. Voted the city’s #1 farmers market. Open Wednesday–Sunday year-round; the indoor Market House has hot food, coffee, and specialty groceries any day.
- Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park — right next to the Farmers’ Market. Nashville’s 19-acre state park with the World War II memorial, 200-ft granite Tennessee map, and a carillon that plays every 15 minutes. Beautiful morning walk.
- McFerrin Park — a 5-minute walk from the front door. Neighborhood park with a playground, basketball courts, and a community garden.
- East Nashville Farmers’ Market — seasonal (June through October), just across Nissan Stadium. Wednesday afternoons.
Shopping & Neighborhood Walks
- Five Points (East Nashville) — short rideshare east. Vintage shops, indie boutiques, the classic Five Points strip — see our full Nashville shopping guide.
- Germantown boutiques — 5–7 minutes across the river. Wilder, Peter Nappi, Nisolo, and the boutiques clustered around 6th Ave North.
- The Neuhoff development — 5 minutes across the river. New restaurant + retail campus in the old meatpacking plant. Monday Night Brewing, Charmers coffee, and a rotating slate of pop-ups.
- Downtown / Broadway shopping — 1.5 miles, 10 minutes by rideshare. Ernest Tubb Record Shop, Hatch Show Print, and the honky-tonk gift shops if that’s your speed.

- Kroger East Nashville — closest full-service grocery, about 5 minutes.
- Turnip Truck — East Nashville’s beloved natural-foods grocery. Good for coffee, prepared foods, and a nicer wine selection.
- Publix Germantown — about 8 minutes across the river if you want a bigger store.
