Thanksgiving in Nashville is a mix of tradition and Southern hospitality — from historic steakhouses running prix fixe menus to Music Valley buffets to legendary BBQ joints selling whole smoked turkeys and briskets by the pound. This is a city that takes feeding people seriously, whether that means sitting down at Jimmy Kelly’s or hauling home a Martin’s Take & Bake spread.

If your family wants to eat at home in your rental but nobody wants to cook, this is where Nashville shines. Several of the city’s best restaurants and BBQ joints let you order a full Thanksgiving spread — turkey, sides, pies — and pick it up the day before. Reheat, plate, and pretend you cooked all day.
These are also great for large groups where the restaurant reservation math doesn’t work. A Martin’s whole smoked turkey plus a brisket feeds 15–18 for less than the cost of one prix fixe seat. That math works for us — the brisket from Martin’s is our family’s standing order, along with Shotgun Willie’s for backup. Nashville does lights beautifully — the mansion at Cheekwood, the atriums at Gaylord Opryland, the driving tours out in Wilson County. These are the ones locals actually go to, and the ones worth planning a night around.

Schedule these on your first or second day in town so you have time to grab an actual print at a nearby Walgreens or CVS before you send cards. All three deliver digital files, but nothing beats a card in the mail on December 10.

New Year’s Eve in Nashville
Nashville’s NYE is a full-blown production. The main event — the Music City Big Bash — is free, draws over 250,000 people to Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, and gets broadcast live nationally on CBS as part of New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash. It’s anchored by a music note drop (Nashville’s version of the ball drop) and fireworks at midnight, with country music headliners performing on multiple stages throughout the evening.
Important logistics note
The Big Bash used to launch fireworks at the foot of Broadway — it doesn’t anymore. The concerts, music note drop, and fireworks are now at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, a few blocks north near the Tennessee State Capitol. Most Broadway rooftop bars don’t have a sightline. Broadway itself is still the loudest, most crowded honky-tonk party in America and worth every bit of the energy — just know the actual fireworks and stage moved. If you want the show, head to Bicentennial or find a rooftop with a clean north-facing view of the Capitol.

What Doesn’t Change During the Holidays
The homes are still the homes — same amenities, same neighborhoods, same policies. Pet-friendly homes (Magnolia, Hydrangea, Rocky Top) still accept one dog. Yes — Broadway is packed, loud, and full of honky-tonk NYE energy, and rooftop bars there are worth the vibe. But the actual Big Bash fireworks, music note drop, and concert stage have moved off the foot of Broadway and are now at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, a few blocks north near the Tennessee State Capitol. Most Broadway rooftop bars don’t have a clear sightline to Bicentennial. Is Cheekwood or Gaylord Opryland better for kids?
Both work — different vibes. Cheekwood is outdoors, one-mile walking path, warm cocoa stops, fire pits, s’mores, and Santa on select weekends. Best for kids who enjoy walking and stargazing at lights. Gaylord Opryland is indoor (climate-controlled), massive scale, ICE! sculpture attraction, and free to walk the atriums. Best for kids who need to burn energy inside on a cold night. Zoolumination at the Nashville Zoo is a strong third option — different aesthetic (silk lanterns rather than string lights), and animals are still visible in the enclosures.
